Who is the Real Customer ?

Finally, I began to write my next post. A very big thanks to BRM Prof. This post is a bit different from my previous posts because I am writing this while sitting in the class. And the class is about ___. I don’t know anything about this subject, but still I am not able to even act like listening. Till now, I was reading newspaper in the class. Hey CEG guys “Don’t ask me why I am doing the same thing (which I did in almost all my U.G classes.) even in IIT.” The answer is “Nothing is perfect in this imperfect world. Even some IIT Profs’ classes are pathetic.” Actually the mood of the entire class was like as if they were in the railway station. Most of the students were reading newspapers; some people were sleeping with their eyes closed and some with open eyes (because of tired weekends). Anyway thanks to some of the people who were listening and some who were acting as if they were.......

Suddenly a raised voice saying “You cannot read newspapers in the class”. For the first time in the class all the heads (including mine) raised and the question in my mind was “Is the Prof. referring to me.” Thank god I was not the one. Sorry sir- This was that student’s reply. Even though the Prof. was teaching about the Ethical Issues in Business research he didn’t ask “Is it ethical to read newspaper in the class”.

The Prof. started saying “It’s not justified” and added “there are 5 marks for attendance and 5 marks for class participation”. Then one student asked “Sir, can active listening be a part of participation?”

Then after some 10 minutes of dozing off, his loud voice acted as an alarm for me, what he was saying at that time was “You guys have to respect and understand from the teachers’ perspective. It’s very difficult to shout (he himself used this word) for 2 hours”.

Now I thought of asking “That’s what you are being paid for”. Shouting/teaching for 2 hours is difficult, but listening for 2 hours (sometimes even for 8 hours) is much more difficult (sometimes painful) than shouting. By shouting he is getting at least money. What about us?? We are not getting anything other than good sleep (after all we are also paying for that).

One of the CEG Professors told that “You the students are the customers!!!”
Now the question is - Are the students the real customers??? If it is so – Are they treated as customers??

I can say that teachers are products, because some of the products (read teachers) are really having a very high demand.

But teachers can argue that they are doctors and listening is like a pill. Anyway as customers we are ready to take the pill as long as it is not a sleeping pill.

We do understand the teachers’ pain and respect them. That is why I stopped reading newspaper in his class and writing this piece.

The final question is – When will the teacher understand their customers or when will they realize that the students are their customers??? I stop here because the class is over.

    1. Respect is given to those worth it.
    2. Respect can be earned only when people are willing to give.

    "That's all" :P

  13. Nice one! Now our argument on u can take horse to pool but can never make it drink holds true again! :)

Listening to 8hrs is in our monday schedule n we have to put up with it! SAD class wil be sadder from now on!

    abt ur final question,

When wil teachers understand? When we make them understand :P

when wil they realize that we are their customers? when we show low attendance may be! His attendance figures for the quarter will drop which wil be noted a symptom by him and might work on the root cause to create customer value/satisfaction!

  14. nice thoughtful post da..

But i have to disagree with what u say..

Let me just step into the shoes of the prof in question here and put forth some arguments..

------- The students pay my salary yet they don't want to listen to my lecture. The students argue that my class is boring and i don't see good attendance in my class either. -------

I have had profs who make me sleep all those 4 years(luckily not anymore)but one thing to be considered here - u find he is boring by the first lecture and then don listen while , he , on the other hand feels that the students of past 4-5 years are inattentive and not serious and sees u guys the same way....

The problem is with both the sides...i agree that by listening more seriously we can't help in making his lecture better but it has to start somewhere...

Every product is costumer specific but as far as the costumer does not complain about the quality of the product , nothing s going to change.

That said, this was indeed a very nice post.. and made me thing about the system for a long time..and after a long time..

  16. The blog is a thought provoking one... Gud one da....

Dissatisfied customers can either voice their views or stop buying their products.
As students, we can either ask the prof to teach better. But i think that is not feasible with the system here. The second option is we can bunk the class:) At least low attendance (lower market share in case of companies) is an indication for the prof to know his lectures are not worth the two hours. But guys with me including the blog author always tell me that bunking is unethical... I donno how this problem can be solved?????

  17. LMAO at "That's why i stopped reading the newspaper and started writing this post".
But on a serious note, BRM is probably the most useful course i have done at B-school. The project was a pain in the a** but i think i have learnt something that will be useful throughout my career.

  19. nice blog...i want to add sth to it
once a company (college) provided a product (admission) to a customer (student), then the services (teachings) are provided by the company's field employees and dealers (teachers), who dont get any direct benifit because of customer satisfaction. so, a company (college), that want to retain market share (gaining qualified candidates for admission), must have effective control on its dealers and field employees (teachers), as customer satisfaction and in turn, company's future (college's future) depends on them.

    sorry for late comment...
